The Most Beautiful Race in The World: 1000 Mille Miglia 2019

A week full of highs and lows with wet and wild weather to suit, however, nothing could dampen the atmosphere. The Italians sure know how to put on a party and the 2019 Mille Miglia was a spectacle from start to finish. Our founder and CEO Claus Stig Christensen had the pleasure of attendance throughout in a truly unforgettable race spanning Italy.

Insta Dream

The 1000 Miglia is an absolute dream for any discerning photographer but a spectator can certainly enjoy as well. If you follow the BookAclassic Instagram then you will know what we are talking about. The 1000 mile race runs from Brescia to Rome and back taking you on a journey through the heart of Italy. For 30 years this yearly event has seen the organisers subtly tweak the route each year whilst keeping the basic concept the same. This year the route would encompass more of Tuscany which I am sure nobody could be displeased about.

The event saw 450 entrants all in weird and wonderful classics, dating as far back as 1923. The list on offer was quite something with one of our favourites being a seldom seen 1926 B.N.C Monza. You would have thought that owners would not be keen to put another 1000 miles on the clock of their esteemed motors but the reality is starkly different. The 1000 Miglia is a showpiece event organised expertly by a team which will have been rewarded seeing the endless crowds lining up throughout.

Classic Car Joy For All

Such an event highlights what a magnet classic cars can be and how a well organised large scale event can bring joy to a new generation which will carry on this grand tradition. The passion was evident on the final day when the weather turned a little bit nasty. Spectators got suitably drenched in a final day befitting good old Blighty rather than Lombardia but spirits were never dampened as they welcomed the racers back home.

In fact, seeing the joyous crowds and indulging in the Italian hospitality meant that it would be easy to forget that this is a race and not a simple one at that. The Mille Miglia is a combination of time trials, time controls and average trials. This years edition was the current formats 31styear however, the history of this race can be dated to 1927 when some of the cars on feature were brand new. I would be confident to say that back then seeing the children and adults alike high fiving the drivers in admiration and respect would have been just as magical a site as it was all these years later.

The Show Ends For Now

This is why the best way to bring this article to an end is with an ode to this year's winners in what was truly a gruelling test of stamina and skill.

In first place were Giovanni Moceri and Daniele Bonetti in #59, driving an Alfa Romeo 6C 1500 SSA built in 1928. Second place was an essentially an identical Alfa just a year younger, and on third was a 1927 Bugatti Type 40.

Grazie 1000 Mille Miglia and till next year!
