En 1946 Enrico Piaggio demande à l'un de ses ingénieurs de créer un mode de transport moderne et économique. En découvrant le son du moteur 2 temps du prototype, il retient le nom Vespa, qui signifie « guêpe » en italien. En deux coup de kick elle est devenue l’icône absolue de la dolce vita Italienne.
