I rescued her because I couldn’t resist that curved silhouette and the way the chrome catches the light like a laugh. When I slide behind the wheel, I’m not just driving; I’m continuing a story that began long before me. My garage is a family album on wheels: a 1971 Volkswagen T1 Kombi that smells of old maps and coffee, a spirited 1960 Citroën 2CV that hops and hums with mischievous charm, twin 1965 Volkswagen T1s that argue only about who gets the best view, a steady 1965 Escarabajo with a heart like a metronome, and a 1992 Rover Classic Mini Cooper that turns every corner into a wink. Each car keeps its personality, and together they teach me patience, care, and that joy is a slow, mechanical thing. I love sharing them — watching strangers’ faces—children pressed to windows, lovers holding hands—when La Romaneta purrs to life.
