1986 Toyota Corolla Gt Twin Cam
This AE86-generation Toyota Corolla GT Twin-cam 16V is a particularly smart and tastefully modified example of the sought-after Japanese modern classic, which has benefited from a previous restoration. Under the bonnet sits the naturally aspirated 1.6-litre twin-cam ‘4A-GE’ inline-four, producing around 128bhp and driving the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission. The odometer currently displays 6,554 miles, however this is not warranted. A right-hand drive, UK-market example, this Corolla was sold new by Hills Automobiles of Woodford Green, Essex, in May 1986. The car was then exported to Ireland in June 1996, and has been with the seller for the last 11 years. This original UK-market example has been with the seller and third owner in Ireland for 11 years. Well-known as the ‘AE86’ amongst enthusiasts due to its internal series number, the fifth-generation, 1.6-litre Corolla rapidly became a cult favourite, thanks to its light weight, affordability, and rear-wheel drive layout, which saw it used extensively in drift events, as well as securing it a place in pop culture history by becoming the hero car in the popular manga and anime series ‘Initial D’. A post-facelift, three-door liftback model, this Corolla GT is finished in its original burgundy with unfinished black plastic bumpers, side skirts, rear spoiler, rub strips and door mirror housings, with black ‘Twin Cam 16v’ decals on both doors. Inside, the cabin is trimmed in blue cloth and vinyl, with matching blue carpet throughout. The car now rides on an aftermarket set of 13-inch Superlite alloy wheels, which are fitted with mixed tyres. The factory specification includes a heated rear windscreen, a three-spoke steering wheel, variable speed windscreen wipers, electric windows, heater and ventilation controls, and a digital clock. This Corolla GT has been upgraded with, Sparco pedal covers, a Goodmans CD stereo, an Apexi RSM rev/speed metre, an Apexi Super Airflow Convertor, ClimAir Sport wind deflectors, a Cusco front strut brace, a non-standard air intake with a cone filter, adjustable BC coilover suspension, and a stainless-steel Janspeed exhaust. Other modifications include braided stainless-steel brake lines, Superflex polyurethane suspension bushes, and ‘competition’ front brake discs. The car supplied with a spare wheel, a stamped service booklet, some old MOT test certificates, and a fair collection of maintenance invoices.
