2017 Ford Mustang GT coupe in striking yellow with the original factory racing stripes across the bonnet, roof and boot. I ordered this car new from North Harbour Ford in Auckland in 2016 and waited for it to be built at Ford’s Flat Rock plant in Michigan — I’ve owned it since new and it’s been my car ever since. Under the bonnet is the unmistakable 5.0-litre V8. I’ve kept the Mustang largely original but added a larger throttle body and an open-air intake (around +15 hp estimated) and fitted aluminium rear window louvers for a more classic muscle look. Exterior and interior are otherwise as Ford intended — this is a muscle car meant to be driven, not babied. It’s happiest on winding mountain passes and summer tours around the North Island; I often take a tent and camp along the way. The boot is surprisingly roomy for gear. The car draws attention everywhere — people notice the colour and the sound of the V8 — and it rewards respectful driving: powerful, responsive, and not something to take lightly.
