I’m David — lifelong classic car enthusiast and proud owner of this iconic London Black Cab. After nearly a decade of on-and-off restoration, she’s finally back on the road and ready to be shared with the community. But this isn’t just an old taxi. It’s a piece of history, full of character and vintage charm. This is the final model of the legendary Austin FX4, produced from 1958 to 1997 — one of the longest-running British vehicle designs, right up there with the Mini as one of the icons of British motoring heritage. My mission is simple: bring joy, create memorable experiences, and celebrate British heritage, from attending car shows, local fundraisers to celebrating important moments of national heritage like Remembrance and VE Day.
When I first stumbled across my Fairway Driver back in 2017, I wasn’t looking for one at all. It appeared on an online marketplace almost by chance — a loved but slightly tired and forgotten cab, from a farm in the West Country. Something about it caught my eye immediately. It looked quirky, different, full of character, and the front end reminded me of the 1950s and ’60s BMC cars my dad used to drive — the big chrome grille, the round headlamps, that unmistakable British charm. The cab was running, but it hadn’t been used for several years. Its owner had moved on to something more modern for motorway work, leaving the Fairway to rest (rust) quietly. I knew from the moment I saw it that it would be a big project, but it felt quirky, fun, and worth saving. What started as a fun project idea, quickly turned into a 10 yearlong determined restoration, bringing the cab back to life one step at a time. It was remarkably solid in the right places, but needed love & attention to bring her back to former glory. One thing that surprised me early on was just how clean inside the engine was, as for an old diesel it looked remarkably fresh — either very well maintained or rebuilt not long before its retirement from licensed service in London. It gave me hope that the project was truly worth the effort. The restoration wasn’t quick or easy. It took years of graft, learning, frustration, and a fair bit of stubbornness to get the cab back on the road, but every step was worth it. For me, this old taxi isn’t just a vehicle, it’s a story — one of patience, passion, and keeping a piece of iconic British motoring heritage alive. Today, that once-forgotten taxi is back to its former glory, road-legal, ultra reliable, and full of the character that made these Fairway Drivers so loved by London Cabbies and tourists alike. The cab is also now proudly a member of the London Vintage Taxi Association (LVTA).
