By the late 1970s, the Mk3 Capri was beginning to show its age, and tightening emissions regulations forced Ford to drop the thirsty, heavy 3.0-litre Essex V6. Facing dwindling sales and the prospect of the Capri being axed, Ford's SVE division stepped in. They took the smooth 2.8-litre Cologne V6 engine used in the Granada and fitted it with Bosch fuel injection.
