1972 Leyland Moke

Robert M.

Since 2019

RM

This 1972 Mini Moke was originally a right-hand-drive Australian-market example that was imported by the prior owner and then given a complete, customized restoration over the course of two years. Highlights include a conversion to left-hand drive, all new paint, interior, and cosmetics, a 1275cc high-compression four-cylinder engine, upgraded suspension/braking, and much more as detailed below. The seller has owned this Moke for around two years and approximately 500 miles, noting that it is a blast to drive and will cruise easily at highway speeds. This unique Moke is now offered with two binders full of detailed restoration-related documentation, some spare parts, current California registration, and a clean California title. It is apparent that the two-year restoration was completed to a high standard, with the first order of business being a left-hand drive conversion. The vehicle was stripped down and professionally painted yellow, which contrasts well with the blue push-bar bumpers and roll bar. New mirrors, trim, and mud flaps were also fitted along with stainless steel hardware replacing nearly all of the OEM components. A custom center-exit exhaust system is shown above. This Moke comes with two roof options including the bikini top seen above. Additionally, a custom canvas top with side curtains was fabricated as shown in the photo gallery below, and both versions are color-matched to the bumpers and roll bar. Rolling stock consists of 12″ Minilite-style wheels wrapped in new 165/60 series Yokohama A539 tires. Braking is handled with discs up front and OEM Mini fins in the rear. The brakes and master cylinder are all-new. The seller mentions that there is no rust, corrosion, or filler to be found on this Moke, which looks sharp throughout in photos. Hella driving and fog lamps are fully functional and give the vehicle a rallye-style look. The suspension is described as fully adjustable with new shocks recently installed. Inside, second-generation Mazda Miata seats have been fitted along with 3″ lap belts. The original seats are included with the sale, but will need restoration. The floor has been treated with Rhino-liner for easy cleaning and is covered with new rubber floor mats. All surfaces look to be in nice condition throughout. A custom-built dashboard with carbon fiber inserts frames all-new Magnolia gauges. All instrumentation and lighting is said to work well with the exception of an erratic fuel gauge. The thick Mini steering wheel has been fitted and the odometer currently shows 1,175 miles, though true mileage is unknown. Under the hood, a 1275cc high-compression inline-four was fitted during the restoration and is mated to a 4-speed manual transmission. Bosch electronic ignition is utilized along with a 3:1 header, single HIF carburetor, relocated rod change shift mechanism, and a new fuel pump/sending unit. The seller states that this Moke runs and drives very well with a smooth clutch and surprising amount of pep, and can be enjoyed at highway speeds.
