1988 Saab 900 turbo SPG Aero SPG Aero
1988 Saab 900 SPG “Aero” — Enthusiast-Built, Detail-Driven Known as the SPG (Special Performance Group) in the United States and the Aero in Europe, this 1988 Saab 900 is a one-of-a-kind, enthusiast-built project that has evolved over more than two decades of ownership, refinement, and passion. Owned since 1998, it began life as my daily driver in New York City, later becoming a long-term build reflecting years of hands-on work, experimentation, and learning. For the past 15 years, it has been garage-kept in Los Angeles, brought out only for select events, photo shoots, and special occasions. The car gained international attention when it was featured on Drive TV’s The Smoking Tire in 2015, in the episode “How Good Is a Tuned Saab?” — a segment that received millions of views and introduced this unique build to enthusiasts worldwide. At that stage, the project was still developing. Since then, it has matured into a balanced and reliable driver’s car shaped by decades of experience and input from the Saab community. The guiding idea has always been to preserve Saab’s character while elevating its performance and drivability. --- Performance and Mechanical Details The engine is Saab’s legendary turbocharged four-cylinder — upgraded extensively but retaining its original block and cylinders, which have never been opened. These engines are remarkably robust when treated with mechanical sympathy, capable of handling substantial power without internal modification. Upgrades include: Ported and upgraded cylinder head Custom exhaust and intake manifolds Front-mount intercooler for consistent charge temperatures High-flow exhaust system Upgraded fuel delivery components Custom engine management tuning for smooth, progressive boost response The setup produces about 300 hp at the crank (≈265 wheel) and 360–400 lb-ft of torque. The gearbox, long known as the Saab 900’s weak point, has been fully rebuilt and upgraded. After seven transmissions over its life, the car now runs Swedish Police “Number 8” primary gears, which reduce strain on the gearbox by delivering power more linearly while also raising top-speed potential to roughly 150 mph. Even so, it rewards a gentle, progressive driving style that respects the drivetrain’s design. --- Chassis and Exterior Body: factory steel with fiberglass flares molded into the body, widening the stance by about six inches Carbon-fiber parts: custom hood and custom rear wing Suspension: fully adjustable custom setup tuned for balance Brakes: big-brake conversion for modern stopping power Wheels/Tires: forged 18×8.5 in. wheels with custom offsets matching the widebody geometry Color: Edwardian Gray, a deep factory Saab tone, professionally refinished --- Interior and Driving Experience The cockpit remains pure Saab — minimalist, functional, and purpose-built. Up to eight auxiliary gauges (all matching Saab’s factory illumination) monitor key systems including boost, fuel pressure, and oil temperature. Recaro seats from a Mitsubishi Evo VII fit perfectly, providing excellent lateral support for spirited driving while matching the car’s refined aesthetic. --- Recognition and Community While it’s not a high-end restomod, it’s what I call a “homemade restomod” — built through patience and love rather than an unlimited budget. At one of Los Angeles’s respected car gatherings, organized by automotive journalist Johnny Lieberman, he personally asked for the Aero to be parked beside a Porsche Singer — one of the world’s most coveted restomods. Despite being a budget-built enthusiast project, it stood proudly among multi-million-dollar machines. Over time, I’ve received personal compliments from icons such as Magnus Walker, Matt Farah, Johnny Lieberman, and others, all of whom appreciated the authenticity and craftsmanship behind the car. --- The Spirit of the Build Every major system — engine, gearbox, suspension, brakes, bodywork, wheels, and interior — has been refined with patience and intention. This isn’t a shop commission or a showpiece; it’s a driver’s car built to celebrate Saab’s spirit through real-world engineering and creativity. Finished in Edwardian Gray, the Aero blends Scandinavian restraint with motorsport aggression. It proves that a carefully built, home-grown project can hold its own beside the greats — not through cost, but through understanding and care. If you know Saabs, you’ll feel its soul instantly. If you don’t, you’ll understand as soon as you sit in it. It’s raw, responsive, and full of personality — a true enthusiast’s dream realized. --- Owner’s Note This car represents more than 25 years of learning, trial, and joy — a project that’s grown with me and continues to evolve. It’s not perfect, and that’s part of its charm. Every sound, every vibration tells a story of craftsmanship, patience, and love for the Saab brand. ⚠️ Please note: this car is not available for driving rentals. It may be rented only for photoshoots, video production, or display purposes. It must be handled with extreme care — as if it were made of eggshells. For any motion or driving scenes, the owner will be the one operating the vehicle, and must be present at all times. --- Would you like me to make a short “summary paragraph” for the top of your DriveShare listing (something like 2–3 sentences that appear before the full description, emphasizing that it’s a showpiece, not a driving rental)?
