How to Hire a Classic Car: A Complete Beginner's Guide

New to classic car hire? Here's exactly how it works on BookAclassic, from finding the right car to picking up the keys.

Hiring a classic car is not the same as renting a hatchback at the airport. You're borrowing something rare, often hand-built, and almost always owned by an enthusiast who cares about it deeply. That changes how the process works. Once you understand it, booking your first classic is genuinely simple.

1. Decide what the car is for

The right classic depends entirely on the occasion. A wedding wants elegance and presence; a weekend in the hills wants an open top and a willing engine; a film shoot wants period accuracy. Start by browsing our hire guides by occasion to narrow the field before you fall in love with the first photo you see.

If you already know the model you want, our classic car model guides cover what each one is actually like to live with for a day, including the charm and the quirks.

2. Search and compare

Every car on BookAclassic is listed by its owner, so no two are identical. Use Rent a car to filter by location, dates, make, and model. Read the listing carefully: check the mileage limits, whether it is a self-drive or Chauffeur rental, and what the owner expects at handover.

  • Self-drive puts you behind the wheel: ideal for road trips and experiences.
  • Chauffeur hire includes a driver, and is the usual choice for weddings and events.
  • Not sure which suits you? Read self-drive vs Chauffeur.

3. Request your dates

Send a booking request with your dates and a short note about the occasion. Owners love context. Telling them it's your parents' golden anniversary often gets you a warmer welcome and the odd extra touch. The owner confirms, and your payment is only taken once they accept.

4. Insurance, deposits and paperwork

For self-drive hires of cars located in the United States, insurance is included through BookAclassic and selected at checkout. Everywhere else, the owner arranges the cover for the hire; check the listing for its terms. A refundable security deposit is held against damage, as is standard practice for valuable cars. You'll usually need a full licence held for a minimum period and a second form of ID. Check the listing for the exact requirements, and see our Help Centre for the fine print.

5. Collection and the drive

On the day, the owner walks you around the car, points out the controls (classics can be charmingly idiosyncratic), and notes the fuel and mileage. Take your time, ask questions, and enjoy it; that's the whole point.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need special insurance to hire a classic car?
No. You don't arrange your own policy. For U.S. self-drive hires, insurance is included through BookAclassic; elsewhere the owner arranges the cover for the hire. You'll typically need a full driving licence held for a minimum period; the exact terms are shown on each listing.
Is there a deposit?
Yes. A refundable security deposit is held against damage and returned after the car comes back in the same condition. The amount varies by car and is shown before you book.
Can I drive a classic car myself?
Often, yes. Many listings are self-drive. Some owners only offer chauffeured hire for their most valuable cars. Each listing states which option applies.
