When am I charged for my booking?

For request bookings, your card is held when you submit and the payment is captured only when the owner accepts. For Instant Book listings, payment is taken immediately at the time of booking.

For US self-drive rentals a security deposit (minimum the equivalent of $200) is secured before the trip, typically at the later of the owner's approval or 72 hours before the start, and released after the car is returned without a claim. Chauffeured and event rentals don't carry a renter deposit. See the Security deposit policy for details.

Booking well in advance? You may be able to pay later

On some bookings made more than 30 days before the trip starts, you can confirm now and have the payment collected automatically about 30 days before pick-up instead of straight away. Where it's available, the option and the exact charge date are shown at checkout before you confirm. Just keep the card on your booking valid so the scheduled payment can be taken. If it can't be completed in time, the booking can eventually be cancelled.
