230, 250, or 280 SL?

230 SL (1963–67): lightest and purest. 250 SL (1966–68): rare, longer-stroke engine, disc brakes all round. 280 SL (1968–71): most powerful and smoothest, and the most produced for the US market. It is the easiest one to hire.

What it's like to drive

The Pagoda is heavier and more stable than an E-Type, with a less sporting feel. The automatic 280 SL is one of the best classic 'cruise' cars on the platform: quiet, comfortable, and reasonably quick. Swapping the hardtop is a two-person job. Most owners keep it on for transfers and remove it for ceremonies.

Cultural appearances

  • Featured on the cover of countless travel magazines; favoured by 1960s European film stars.
  • Often nicknamed the 'California Coupé' when configured with the optional hardtop and no soft-top.

What occasions it suits

  • Mature / second-marriage weddings
  • Cote d'Azur and Tuscany touring
  • Photo shoots and lifestyle content
  • Anniversary gifts (chauffeured or self-drive)
